You cannot start the game in offline mode, so if you are talking about playing the game without internet it doesnt work. You have to have a connection to play the game. And yes you can play vs bots and prefer to not be matched with players in said gamemode so you instantly get a team of bots with you in it against other bots.

On Steam and uPlay, Ubisoft’s next-big-thing third-person combat game For Honor is listed as having “an engaging single-player, offline campaign.” However, in a message sent to one fan last night and confirmed by email to PCGamesN today, Ubisoft say that the game “is an always online experience.” The listings are yet to be updated.

First mentioned to a NeoGAF poster last night via the official forums and confirmed to us by a spokesperson this morning, Ubisoft’s statement is this:
“We can confirm that For Honor is an always online experience. Some elements of progression, which is hosted online, are shared across story and multiplayer modes. Players will need to be connected to the Internet at all times to play For Honor.”
This goes against what is currently listed on both the game’s Steam and uPlay pages, which state unequivocally that “For Honor offers an engaging single-player, offline campaign and thrilling multiplayer.” Here’s some screengrabs, as they’re likely to be updated soon:
Presumably, something changed during development that lead to more interconnectivity between the single-player and multiplayer modes, thus requiring some form of anti-cheat or stat sync. Reaction in the NeoGAF thread is as negative as you’d expect.
Ubisoft are also running another NDA’d closed alpha test on PC over the next week. You’ll already know if you’re invited and nobody involved is allowed to stream, record or otherwise spread the game, but watch out for the odd leak anyway.
